Report: European Email Marketing Conference 2010

The Millenium Gloucester Hotel & Conference centre in London was this year’s location for the second edition of the European Email Marketing Conference. The three days of conference were filled with innovating and educational content designed and created by e-mail marketers. Reputation, deliverability, segmentation and email optimization were just some of the topics discussed during the interesting and interactive presentations.

If there is one clear message visitors will remember from this event, it’s that e-mailmarketeers have to become more passionate about their databases, listen to and engage with their customers and put a strong focus on the relevance of content.

Day 1

On the first day, visitors were welcomed with the interactive and innovative workshop: Ready, Steady Email! During this workshop the marketers were teamed up together to work on a case study to review and enhance an email strategy. This session provided the visitors the opportunity to discuss their ideas and advices on email marketing and a chance to see how their peers would implement email marketing within a marketing strategy.

Day 2

The second day kicked off with a keynote presentation by Ted Wham who showed the visitors how to create a world-class email marketing team within your company. He pointed out that an email marketing team needs to support one of the widest skill set mixes of any marketing department team, ranging from cross creative, technical, analytical and operational disciplines. Amongst other crucial tips, Ted mentioned that an important part of setting up a good email marketing strategy starts from within the company. For example, a research & development team can provide the email marketing team with vital insights in a company’s or target group’s current situation.

Following Ted’s presentation, the conference offered concurrent sessions throughout the day. During these sessions marketers could learn more about storytelling, segmentation, design optimization, cross-channel lifecycle marketing and other best practices.

The program of day 2 was concluded with a presentation of FEDMA (Federation of European Direct and Interactive Marketing) and  during which the visitors were shown some of the results from the Pan-European Email Marketing Study. Main take-away: open percentages, click through rates, deliverability and volumes of email campaigns are expected to rise. Opt-out rates however will remain the same according to the study.

Day 3

Just as he did at the Dutch Email Marketing Conference, Chris Combemale held his keynote speech on the subject of creating a trust framework for Web 3.0. Chris shared his view on the developments concerning data exchange in the future. In this vision consumers will not have to look for relevant information any longer. The information will find its way to the consumer by using smart new services and applications. Search engines will become ‘Do engines’.

Just as day 2, the third day was filled with many interesting sessions where visitors could gain and share necessary know-how. During a panel discussion between Tripadvisor, KLM and SPIL Games, visitors got to see how these innovating companies use email and web behaviour to test and improve the effectiveness of their global programs and marketing campaigns.

The final presentation of the day was given by Web Power. Jacco Bouw, CEO of Web Power shared his insights on the development of email marketing within the Chinese market. A market that is on the verge of making a big shift in the way email marketing is being performed. Big volumes give an extremely high potential in testing and individualizing content, a practice that is hardly used in China at this time.

In short, the three days were filled with interaction, sharing best-practices and experiences, networking and getting a glimpse of what is to come on the subject of email marketing. All the more reason to look forward to the next European Email Marketing Conference in 2011.
